Krek Theatre Company

Krek was founded in 1999. As well as staging productions at various venues around Istanbul, the theatre company has performed at numerous festivals in Europe. Committed since its inception to staging plays written and directed by Berkun Oya, Krek has built up a loyal audience over the years, reflecting the provocative texts and original stage design of its productions. Since December 2010, the theatre company has been resident at Gallery 1, a restored and redesigned historical storage building within the santralistanbul complex.

At its new home venue in santralistanbul, Krek retains the same maverick vision of earlier days, favouring a stage design that rejects the audiovisual conventions of traditional theatre. The audience is divorced from the action by a stage section that creates the impression of a film frame, and the glass screen covering it. Sound, meanwhile, is delivered through quadraphonic wireless headphones.

With the holistic approach to play, space and stage that is its hallmark, Krek remains a magnet of critical and popular interest. Plays are performed every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
