Modern and Beyond Exhibition

As the opening exhibition of santralistanbul, Modern and Beyond presented the 50-year history of Turkish art from 1950 to 2000. Curated by Fulya Erdemci, Semra Germaner, Orhan Koçak, and Zeynep Rona, the exhibition revealed the transformation of artistic production in Türkiye, showcasing approximately 500 works by over 100 artists and artist collectives.

Originally scheduled to run from September 9, 2007, to February 29, 2008, it was extended to June 15, 2008, due to high demand. The exhibition took a chronological approach and included not only traditional mediums like painting and sculpture but also installations, photography, video, and new media.

Modern and Beyond encouraged visitors to reconsider Türkiye’s modernization experience through art. Panels held in conjunction with the exhibition provided a platform for reinterpreting Turkish art history. Works were selected from nearly 50 museums, institutions, and private collections.
